Ponche de Crème
Christmas season
IconicRegional drink
A smooth, spiced holiday drink of milk, eggs, sugar, rum, spices and Angostura bitters, descended from Venezuelan ponche crema. It is traditionally served with ice, though it can also be served warm or chilled.
Punch traces it to Venezuelan ponche crema, a mix of milk, eggs, sugar, rum and spices, which Venezuelan migrants brought to Trinidad for work in the 1800s. The Trinidad version adds Angostura bitters. Bartender Chad Lee Loy, whose aunt taught him the drink 15 years ago, makes a version with fennel and cardamom.
Made with: eggs, milk, sugar, rum, spices, Angostura bitters.
