Pina Colada
Puerto Rico's rum, coconut and pineapple blend, made with fresh juice
Puerto Rico's national drink: rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice blended or shaken with ice and served in a hurricane glass with pineapple and a cherry.
Country
One drink is tied to Puerto Rico. The label on each says how: where it began, what the country is known for, what people drink there, or where the origin is disputed.
Associations are editorial judgements. The evidence link shows the source used.
Three San Juan bartenders claim the coconut version: Ramon Marrero at the Caribe Hilton's Beachcomber Bar in 1952 or 1954, his colleague Ricardo Garcia, and Ramon Portas Mingot at Barrachina in 1963. Difford's finds the Caribe Hilton date believable because Coco Lopez cream of coconut had just become available on the island, and suggests the name may have settled at Barrachina a decade later. Puerto Rico is documented; the individual is not.
