Drinks of Pakistan

Signature drinks and regional ones, with the evidence behind each. A drink marked non-alcoholic has no alcohol in the traditional serve.

    PopularRegional drinkNon-alcoholic

A traditional Kashmiri tea of gunpowder green tea boiled long with baking soda, which turns it burgundy, then finished with milk and salt for a pink drink, aerated by ladling it back into the pot to build froth. It is traditionally brewed in a copper samovar, and Pakistani versions are often served with sugar and nuts.

Wikipedia says the origins are uncertain, with one story tracing the tea along the Silk Road from Yarkand to Kashmir. Alkaline salts used in tea came from the Tibetan Plateau, and Kashmir Valley residents later replaced yak butter with milk and cream.

Made with: gunpowder green tea, baking soda, salt, milk.
