Drinks of Norway

Signature drinks and regional ones, with the evidence behind each. A drink marked non-alcoholic has no alcohol in the traditional serve.

    IconicRegional drink

Hot coffee, heated without boiling, poured into a cup and mixed with clear spirit in roughly equal parts, sometimes with a spoon of sugar. It is drunk hot. Other Norwegian names include kaffedoktor and knikt, and Sweden calls it kask.

Wikipedia says the exact origin is unknown and that the drink was apparently popular in the Bohuslan district, then Swedish, in the early 1800s, and spread across Norway by the second half of that century. It is most closely tied to Trondelag today.

Made with: hot coffee, clear spirit (moonshine, grain spirit or vodka), sugar (optional).
