The Fabled Pour

Country

Nigeria

I have one sourced drink connected to Nigeria. The label on each card says how: where it began, what the country is known for, what people drink there, or where the origin is disputed.

    IconicSignature drinkNon-alcoholic

A red fizzy punch made by combining orange soda and lemon-lime soda with grenadine or blackcurrant cordial, a few dashes of Angostura bitters and citrus. Cucumber and citrus slices go in the glass. It is usually served without alcohol, and the bitters carry the only trace of it.

The popularly told story is that it began at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos, created by a bartender named Samuel Alamutu for a customer called Chapman, which rests on a tertiary source and carries no date. Food writer Ozoz Sokoh writes that its origins are unclear and that the name may once have referred to a peddler. Sources describe it as Nigeria's best-known mixed drink.

Made with: orange soda (Fanta), lemon-lime soda (Sprite), grenadine or blackcurrant cordial, Angostura bitters, cucumber, lemon, lime or orange.
