Fröccs
IconicSignature drink
The Hungarian wine spritzer, a chilled drink of wine and soda water in a named ratio. Kisfröccs is 1 dl wine and 1 dl soda, nagyfröccs is 2 dl wine to 1 dl soda, hosszúlépés is 1 dl wine to 2 dl soda, házmester is 3 dl wine to 2 dl soda, and sportfröccs is 1 dl wine to 4 dl soda. Macifröccs is made with red wine and raspberry syrup.
Wikipedia traces the word spritzer to Austrian German. The Hungarian Conservative links the drink to the soda bottle invented by the monk and scientist Ányos Jedlik. Taste Hungary says Jedlik devised industrial soda water production in 1826, that local lore credits the poet Mihály Vörösmarty with the word fröccs, and that by the late 19th and early 20th century it was a staple sold across the country. Specialized fröccs bars now serve wine and soda or mineral water in many proportions.
Made with: wine, usually white, soda water.
