Hong Kong-style Milk Tea
IconicSignature drinkNon-alcoholic
A blend of black teas, Ceylon among them, steeped strong in a thin cotton bag (the source of the silk stocking nickname) and mixed with evaporated milk, or condensed milk in a variant, and sugar. Cha chaan teng cafes serve it hot or cold.
Hong Kong Memory says Western-style tea was introduced by the English after Britain's colonial administration officially began in 1842, and that lower-grade tea leaves and condensed milk later replaced fine tea and fresh milk. Wikipedia says the Hong Kong government named the milk tea making technique an intangible cultural heritage in 2017.
Made with: strong black tea blend, evaporated or condensed milk, sugar.
