The Fabled Pour

Country

Egypt

I have one sourced drink connected to Egypt. The label on each card says how: where it began, what the country is known for, what people drink there, or where the origin is disputed.

Drinks of Egypt

Signature drinks and regional ones, with the evidence behind each. A drink marked non-alcoholic has no alcohol in the traditional serve.

    IconicRegional drinkNon-alcoholic

A tart, deep red hibiscus infusion sweetened with sugar, served hot or cold. The cold version is poured over ice and may carry a mint sprig or a lime slice.

A travel site calls it one of the country's national drinks, and Wikipedia calls it a traditional beverage of Egypt and Sudan. It is traditionally served at weddings and is popular during Ramadan to break the fast. The tea-of-the-pharaohs idea is presented as popular belief and is not verified.

Made with: dried hibiscus petals, water, sugar.
