Mamajuana
IconicSignature drink
A Dominican drink made by steeping bark and herbs in rum, red wine and honey. It is drunk neat as a room-temperature shot and has a deep red color and a taste like port. Recipes vary by region.
The name comes from the French dame-jeanne, a large squat bottle, and refers to that container rather than a fixed recipe. Wikipedia says the Taino prepared the herbs as a tea before Columbus and that alcohol was added after, and that Jesus Rodriguez of San Juan de la Maguana popularized it in the 1950s as a local herbal remedy. The article is tagged as needing more citations, so this history is popularly told.
Made with: rum, red wine, honey, tree bark, herbs and spices.
