Caipirinha
Brazil's lime and cane spirit short drink, built in the glass
Brazil's national cocktail: cachaca, fresh lime wedges and sugar muddled together and built over ice in a rocks glass.
Country
One drink is tied to Brazil. The label on each says how: where it began, what the country is known for, what people drink there, or where the origin is disputed.
Associations are editorial judgements. The evidence link shows the source used.
Cachaca, lime and sugar is the national drink of Brazil, and Difford's places its emergence in the countryside of Sao Paulo state, with cachaca shipped from Piracicaba through the port of Santos where the name is said to have stuck. The Spanish flu remedy of cachaca, lime, honey and garlic and the sailors' scurvy story are told as stories, not documented. The country is certain; the first glass is not.
